Reading Wikipedia in Classroom Program
Description
Traditional learning methods in Rwandan schools often rely heavily on textbooks and note memorization. This can lead to limited critical thinking, research skills, and engagement among students. Furthermore, access to diverse and updated information resources can be limited, hindering students’ ability to explore topics beyond the textbook.
The Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda proposes a project to integrate Wikipedia into the curricula of Rwandan secondary schools. This initiative aims to leverage Wikipedia’s vast knowledge repository to enhance student’s learning experience and improve their information literacy skills.
Objectives
The primary objectives of this project are:
- To promote information literacy: Equip students with the skills to identify, evaluate, and utilize information effectively.
- To enhance critical thinking: Encourage students to analyze information, form their own opinions, and engage in constructive debates.
- To broaden knowledge: Provide students with access to a vast and diverse range of information beyond textbooks.
- To improve writing skills: Encourage students to write effectively by using Wikipedia as a model for clear and concise language.
- To cultivate a culture of lifelong learning: Foster a love of learning and a desire to explore new topics independently.
